Dr. Susan helps adults pay critical attention to what is going
on inside and to have more personal control over their reactions
to incidents and issues in their day-to-day life. Clients
examine how current patterns of dealing with emotions, change,
other individuals, family and career demands, among many other
things, are tied to factors like family of origin tapes, and
the utilization of ineffective coping strategies developed
to deal with past losses or trauma. Intervention focuses on
the development of more effective mindsets, skills and strategies.
Relationships are challenging, so, it is best
to prepare for the inevitable conflicts that will arise when
individuals with different preferences,
priorities, values, and dreams try to form one life. Dr. Susan
helps couples examine spousal expectations as well as perspectives
on parenting,
religion, finances, and sexuality, among other areas. Interventions
that are aimed at improving insight, empathy, conflict resolution
skills, frustration tolerance, and communication are provided
for:
- Couples prior to marriage
- Couples who want to remain in and
improve their union yet recognize that their relationships
are off track with key expectations.
- Couples seeking divorce mediation,
which can be particularly helpful when unresolved conflicts,
anger, and grief interfere with parents making optimal decisions
regarding custody, visitation, and co-parenting. This is
extremely important since children suffer when parents split
up and the ripple effect can impact their emotional, social
and school functioning as well as current and future relationships.

Dr. Susan May also provides child-rearing consultation regarding
areas such as sibling relationship conflicts, discipline,
educational problems, developmental transitions, and conflicting
parenting expectations. Specific areas of interest include
adoptive parenting, grandparents parenting, and empowering
fathers.
