As a young girl, Dr. Susan May grew
up viewing the world as a colorful and
fascinating study of contrasts and contradictions. At the
age of 6 she
joined her family on a two-year stay in India where her father,
an American
educator, was selected to consult at a regional teacher's
college. She was
struck by the anomaly she witnessed; amongst India's rich
spices and silks
and the majesty of the Taj Mahal, great poverty and suffering
existed. The
Voice of America radio broadcasts brought frequent news of
civil and
racial unrest and political assassinations back home in the
USA. Her
responsive parents reassured, validated and raised additional
questions as
young Susan pondered this world that seemed so beautiful,
yet so unfair.
This early experience and her parents'
positive influence served as strong
forces in her life and sparked a lifelong interest in improving
the human
condition. Dr. Susan exposed herself to political, philosophical,
and psychological research while double majoring in psychology
and education at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She
gained expertise in developmental, personality, and family
systems theories and psychotherapeutic techniques while obtaining
her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at The Graduate School
and University Center of The City University Of New York.
Dr. Susan continued to develop her expertise in psychology
and human
functioning while providing direct client services and staff
development in
cities across the country including New York City, Baltimore,
Los Angeles
and Atlanta. Working through institutions such as The Bronx
Veterans
Administration Medical Center, Johns Hopkins University and
Medical Center
and Kedren Community Mental Health Center, this polished and
street-smart
professional worked with a diverse group of people, dealing
with real issues
arising from real world situations.
At this time, Dr. Susan consolidates
her skills in her comprehensive
clinical psychology practice, Dr. Susan Hughes May and Associates,
Inc.,
located in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to therapeutic, coaching,
and
training venues, Dr. Susan utilizes print, radio, and television
mediums to
increase awareness regarding mental health issues and effective
life
management. In each venue, Dr. Susan Hughes May aims to encourage
and
empower by improving insight, resilience, and motivation.
Dr. Susan is an
avid tennis player and Little League mother who currently
lives in Atlanta,
Georgia with her husband Ronald and their three sons.
